David teaching in his studio space
David teaches sitar classes from his home in Brunswick Victoria. Private lessons are one hour in length. David has good quality student model sitars for rent, if required.
David's sitar lessons give a strong emphasis on posture and technique. He teaches Indian classical music, and focuses on the study of Ragas (Melodic forms) and Taalas (Rhythm cycles). He teaches appropriate scale exercises, followed by various compositions and improvisational passages. David uses Indian notation (Sargam) for reference, and he also recommends that students audio/video record the classes as well. Indian classical music is taught in an oral tradition, and is generally learned by ear.
David is a patient and encouraging teacher who enjoys teaching beginners . The sitar can be a very daunting instrument at first, but David does his very best to make his students feel comfortable, and to enjoy themselves during class.
